Basics (75 min)
Active yoga sequenced at a moderate pace to improve overall strength, flexibility, and add to your understanding of basic yoga postures. Appropriate for beginners, as well as intermediate students wanting to brush up on the foundations of our alignment-based practice. Beginners & pregnant students welcome!
Community Class (60 min)
These classes are $5 to attend, with no one turned away for lack of funds. These classes are a goodwill offering, an attempt to make yoga more accessible for various income levels. All proceeds from these classes will go to the Working Centre or to New Leaf Yoga Foundation. Beginners welcome!
Expanding Flow (75 min)
Expand your repertoire of poses in our most active and athletic class. Emphasis on building strength, stamina, and applying your understanding of alignment to more complex poses and transitions. 2+ months of previous yoga experience recommended.
Hour Flow (60 min)
Flow through a varying sequence of active standing and floor postures. Emphasis on even breathing, strength building, and fun! Appropriate for those with 2 months+ yoga experience, or fit beginners willing to take things at their own pace. 2+ months of previous yoga experience recommended.
Prenatal Yoga (75 min)
Our prenatal yoga class provides a nurturing environment with an experienced certified teacher and mother of three, Julie Zettel. Through yoga postures, guided relaxation and breath awareness you will prepare the body and mind for the birth, and at the same time relieve the discomfort and stress associated with pregnancy. Beginners welcome. This class is for pregnant students only, this is not a class for couples. Beginners welcome!
Rest & Renew (75 min)
This class begins with gentle stretching, self-massage and breath awareness exercises, leading into longer restorative poses that use props to completely support the body and encourage rest for your body and nervous system. This class can help release tension, realign, and open the body. This class is appropriate for anyone, including beginners, prenatal folks, and can often accommodate students with injuries, chronic pain, and stress-related illness. (Always check with your doctor first, and communicate with the instructor about pre-existing health conditions). Beginners & pregnant students welcome!
Slow Flow (75 min)
Flow at a slow but steady pace through a sequence of floor, balancing, and standing postures. Emphasis on mindful movement, building strength and stamina in transitions, core awareness, and deep breathing. Appropriate for those with 2 months+ yoga experience, or beginners willing to take things at their own pace. Beginners & pregnant students welcome!
Sunrise Practice (60 min)
Doing yoga first thing in the morning mobilizes your joints, warms up your muscles, and brings more clarity and focus for the rest of your day. This is a guided practice, meaning the teacher will practice alongside the class, giving simple instructions for the sequence and for breath, and adding refinements and suggestions for you to deepen your postures. 2+ months of previous yoga experience recommended.
Queer & Trans Yoga (60 min)
A $5 class for folks who self-identify as queer, trans, LGBTQ+ and want to be part of a positive community space. Our intention is to provide a gathering place for yoga practice for those who may feel underrepresented in yoga studio communities. A private, all-gender changeroom and washroom is available at the studio. Beginners welcome!
Branch Out: Exploring Complex Poses - 8-wk intermediate yoga course (90 min)
Get in touch with your inner nerd and your inner athlete in this 8-week course. We will break down complex poses into their component parts to better understand them. We will learn key preparatory poses and drills to ready us for each part of the challenge. We will build up to more elaborate yoga poses with precisely designed sequences. Come ready to shift your practice, to try new things, and to fall, laugh, and learn together. This course is for intermediate students with a strong understanding of their own practice. Not suitable for beginners.
Building a Resilient Body - 6-wk course (90 min)
This course will offer gentle movement practices to bring you towards an experience of suppleness and ease in your body. We will practice the simple art of walking, moving between sitting and standing, and making everyday movements more comfortable and enjoyable. This course will also offer an experience of the Tensegrity Repair Series, a set of movements designed to restore balanced tone, hydration, and healthy range of motion to the muscle and connective tissue (myofascial) matrix of the human body. The 20 movements, most of which are done lying on your back, are highly accessible to different levels and abilities, but almost everyone will find areas of challenge for themselves as we refine our movements each week. This class is ideal for all levels of experience and is especially useful for those seeking to gain balanced flexibility, improve overall posture and well-being, and recover from imbalances due to injuries and overuse. You’ll leave each week with useful and simple practices you can do in a 15-30 minute home practice. Beginners welcome! No previous yoga or movement experience necessary.
Deep Core Recovery for Women - 7-wk course (75 min)
Whether you’re pregnant, recently gave birth, or have had a baby in the last decade, maintaining and regaining core strength can be a challenge. Functional core recovery is not about having six-pack abs, but being able to move with ease and properly support the spine and internal organs. In this 7-week pre-registered course you will learn key movements that will strengthen your core from the inside out, leading to a stronger, more stable middle. We’ll discuss Diastasis recti (abdominal separation), pelvic floor issues, and how the muscles and connective tissue can be healed. You will also learn which movements to avoid and how to modify a yoga practice to help heal your core. Beginners welcome.
Intro to Yoga - 7-wk course (75 min)
Our pre-registered Intro to Yoga courses are great for brand new beginners, those restarting their practice after a long break, and also for anyone new to practicing alignment-based yoga. The focus is on standing poses and key principles of alignment to increase strength, balance, stamina, and flexibility. Intro classes will build progressively from week to week to empower you to move deeper into your practice in a safe and consistent way. Parent & Peanut Yoga - 6-wk course (75 min)
A course for parents and babies up to 9 months old! Come practice yoga with your baby in a supportive environment. This is a 6-week, pre-registered course for parents/caretakers and their babies (newborns up to 9 months old; not appropriate once actively crawling). A great way to get out of the house with your little one and enjoy some gentle exercise to take care of your body and connect with your baby. Beginners welcome!
Parent & Pumpkin Yoga - 6-wk course (75 min)
A course for parents and infants 9 to 18 months old! Come practice yoga with your baby in a supportive environment. This is a 6-week, pre-registered course for parents/caretakers and their infants 9 to 18 months old (not appropriate for toddlers). A great way to get out of the house with your little one and enjoy some gentle exercise to take care of your body and connect with your baby. Beginners welcome!
Yoga for Anxiety & Depression - 7-wk course (75 min)
Using simple yoga postures, breath awareness, meditation, and mindfulness, this course aims to help you deepen your mind/body connection. The act of releasing physical tension and moving your body in new ways can help you move through stuck emotions, create new mental patterns, and bring new awareness into your life. Each week the class will gradually build upon a set of basic yoga postures, appropriate for all levels and abilities. Through the postures, breathing, and meditative exercises, you’ll learn more about your body’s responses to stress. You may discover techniques that help manage mental/emotional patterns and increase groundedness, calmness, and emotional wellbeing. Beginners welcome. ***Our classes are intended to be a complement to, but not a replacement for, professional mental health support.***
Yoga for Round Bodies™ - 7-wk course (75 min)
This course will offer clear and thoughtful modifications of poses for students with round bodies, to make more of the poses and sequences of yoga accessible and doable. Great for beginners and intermediate students, this course is aimed at creating a comfortable environment in which to build strength, flexibility, and balance, specifically with the round body in mind. This class is not about weight loss, but about honouring our bodies and creating an environment where all bodies can do all poses. Click here for more info. Yoga for Runners & Athletes - 7-wk course (75 min)
Whether your goal is to be faster, run or cycle longer, or simply be able to enjoy your sport without pain, yoga is for you. Yoga is the perfect complement to your training program as it relaxes and focuses the mind and balances the physical demands of cardiovascular training. The classes in this pre-registered course will be strong and steady, progressively increasing in depth from week to week. We will explore breathing exercises and techniques for mental focus to enhance your athletic regimen. Increase flexibility in areas that are typically constricted and move through sequences to release tension and enhance joint mobility. Beginners welcome!
Yoga, Running & Snacks - 6-wk course (75 min)
A 6-week spring saunter into practical and mindful approaches to running. Sessions will focus on helpful beginner techniques that explore the biomechanics and core concepts of running. You will establish a foundation for finding easeful stride and efficient movement. The learning of running technique will be interlaced with a playful and curious exploration of running as a practice for introspection. Each class will start with yoga and stretching at Queen Street Yoga, proceed to outdoor running, and finish with tasty snacks and socializing at Legacy Greens. No previous running experience necessary. This class is for the beginner runner, those curious about a running practice, or previous runners who are looking to reconnect, recultivate, or refine a running practice.
Chakra Yoga - 6-wk course (90 min)
Learn how to take the principles of the seven energic centres of the body, the Chakras, into your yoga practice. The Chakra system is a way of explaining how the physical body, natural elements, emotions, and the psyche are all interconnected. This experiential class will blend yoga postures, Bioenergetic exercises, yogic breath techniques, mantra, and music. Explore how awakening the Chakras can impact the body, mind, and spirit. 2+ months yoga experience recommended. Not suitable for beginners.
Kids Yoga - 6-wk course (60 min) *not currently offered*
This playful and engaging class is taught by mother of three Amanda Soikie and introduces children to the practice of yoga through games, songs, and storytelling. Each class includes yoga postures, breathing exercises, a short meditation and relaxation. Cooperative learning in a non-competitive and supportive environment will help children develop greater self-understanding, focus, body awareness, creativity and self-esteem. ***If you know of at least six children interested in Kids Yoga, email us to see if we can schedule a course for them.***
Roll Out Relief: Yoga Tune Up® - 6-wk course (75 min) *not currently offered*
Each week of this course will focus on a different area of the body, relieving discomfort and pain and increasing functional range of movement in the shoulders, upper and lower back, hips, feet, and knees. Using grippy, pliable rubber balls to knead out the knots in tired tissues, you will enhance your body's ability to map and sense itself -- making connections and corrections in areas that are unaddressed through exercise and yoga. These techniques can increase mobility, improve posture, boost performance, and relieve and prevent pain. Whether approaching this work as pre-hab or re-hab, you will empower yourself to create sustainable fitness and longevity in your daily life, athletic routines, and even your office job or commute. Beginners welcome!
Tensegrity: an Introductory Course - 6-wk course (75 min) *not currently offered*
The Tensegrity Repair Series is a set of 20 moderately paced exercises designed to restore balanced tone and healthy range of motion to the muscle and connective tissue (myofascial) matrix of the human body. Leena's study of the Tensegrity Repair Series, created by Gioia Irwin, has helped her deepen core strength, speed her recovery from a repetitive stress shoulder injury, improve day-to-day posture, unwind tension, and bring more balance to her regular yoga asana practice. This class is ideal for all levels of experience and is especially useful for those seeking to recover from imbalances due to injuries and overuse, restore pelvic strength after pregnancy, gain balanced flexibility, and improve overall posture and well-being. Over the course of six weeks we will explore the 20 exercises in detail and learn some of the relevant anatomy principles behind them. The 20 movements, most of which are done lying on your back, are highly accessible to different levels and abilities, but almost everyone will find areas of challenge for themselves as we refine our movements each week. You’ll leave each week with useful and simple practices you can do in a 15-30 minute home practice. Beginners welcome!
