Community Care

What is Community Care?

While we believe in self-care and encourage a self-nurturing approach to wellbeing and health, we also recognize that in order for self-care to be a possibility, you need a certain amount of time and money. This is where Community Care comes in. The idea is that we all need one another to survive and thrive, and that both the government and our own networks should provide it. It also means leveraging whatever privilege you have to benefit others. Learn more by reading Emma's blog post here.

What Does Community Care Look Like at QSY?

As citizens and members of our local community, we are attempting to leverage what privilege we have to share our offerings with more people. Read more below about the ways in which we strive to make our services more accessible.

This class is offered on Sundays at 4:00pm, and is priced at a $5 donation. You can pay with cash, or use a pass that you already have. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. No need to sign up in advance, just drop by!

Basics classes are informative and upbeat, focusing on fundamental poses and simple transitions to help cultivate strength and flexibility. This class maintains an active but moderate pace. Great for beginners and those wanting to review and refine their understanding.

All of us at QSY are concerned about the current provincial government's funding cuts to a variety of sectors in Ontario like healthcare, education, indigenous arts, autism support services, and others. In response, we are offering FREE 10-class passes that never expire to folks who have lost their jobs due to these cuts.

In September, we are focused on healthcare.

In October, we're focusing on education. If you worked in education (as a teacher, EA, DECE, CYW, etc.), but have lost your job as a result of provincial funding cuts, you are welcome to claim this pass no questions asked. Please make sure to visit us during the month of October in order to claim your pass, which will not expire.

We appreciate that individuals who are unable to work (at all, or even just enough to pay the bills) due to the challenges of living with a disability are entitled to live full and vibrant lives. This might mean engaging in self-care through Yoga.

For folks who access ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program), we offer our Monthly-5 Membership at a 50% discount, or $27.50 per month. All of the usual perks and conditions apply. You can read more about those here.

If you are interested in joining, please email info@queenstreetyoga.com and our management team will be in touch with you to set it up.

We offer a variety of 7-week preregistered courses that each specialize in a certain aspect of Yoga or meditation, or is geared towards specific audiences.

Every course is eligible for sliding-scale pricing at three different levels. Please email us at info@queenstreetyoga.com to express your interest and learn more about the options.

Yoga in the Park is offered in partnership with the City of Kitchener, and runs June - August every summer in Victoria Park. Keep your eyes on our website and social media for details about next summer's classes.

Our work-trades are at heart of the community vibe at QSY. They staff our front desk for a few hours per week in exchange for yoga and meditation classes. We appreciate the stewardship our trades undertake, and enjoy the sense of belonging around the studio.

I want to help! What can I do?

If you want to support our efforts at community care, you can do that by spreading the word about it and continuing to support our business in whatever ways you can. Whether that is buying a class pass, signing up for a workshop, or telling people about us, your participation will help us remain a robust and compassionate business.

Keep an eye out in the future for additional avenues for leveraging your privilege for the benefit of others.
